Hat Trick for Apogee Rowing Scholar

Hat Trick for Apogee Rowing Scholar

Rebecca Chin is one of four members of the GB Rowing Team’s ‘Start’ Programme to be awarded a scholarship from Apogee Corporation, one of Europe’s fasting growing suppliers of digital office solutions and managed print services.

Rebecca, who was one of 10 Olympic hopefuls to carry the flame at the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, has just had a very successful weekend at the Metropolitan Regatta held at Eton Dorney.  This was the venue that hosted the Olympic and Paralympic rowing and is the venue for the World Rowing Cup this weekend, which Apogee Corporation is also sponsoring as a local supplier of business equipment.

She came away with a hat trick of wins in GB composite crews; the first in a crew of 4 in the Elite category, put together by GB in an attempt to gain selection for the World Rowing U23 Championships being held in Linz, Austria this year. They finished 8 seconds ahead of the crew in 2nd.

The next win was rather more eventful for the same 4 in the Elite Category. After the first couple of strokes, a cross-wind blew them over, causing their stroke girl’s oar to get caught up in one of the lane buoys, forcing her into a lying down position as she battled to keep hold of her oar. In extreme cases this could have ejected her from the boat but, thankfully, that didn’t happen. This cost them time and their position in the field.  However, by 500m they were in the lead and they finished 9 seconds ahead of 2nd.

The same 4 joined the women’s Senior 8 crew, which contained more GB trialists. This time they finished 10 seconds clear in 6:34.74 minutes.

Barry Ferdinand and Jason Collins, joint CEOs of Apogee Corporation said “We are delighted with this outstanding achievement by Rebecca and fellow crew members.  We, at Apogee, value excellence, determination and dedication, which Rebecca Chin clearly has. We wish her and her fellow teammates all the best in the coming months.”

You can see Rebecca in action again in the Henley Women’s Regatta with the same team of 4 as well as a GB composite 8 in the Elite categories. Rebecca was in the winning crew of the Elite 8s last year and she is determined to retain this title.

She will also be racing internally within GB Rowing with the hope of making selection for the World U23 Rowing Championships. Although only 21, this is her last year as an U23 and, if successful, this would be her second time representing Britain internationally.

Rebecca Chin was selected from over 100 rowers to receive the Apogee Scholarship, which provides help with training, travelling and equipment expenses as she strives to gain selection for the GB Rowing Team Senior Squad.  Following her award Rebecca said she was delighted with the scholarship as “I want to help the GB Rowing Team win more medals and titles and will do everything I can to make this a reality.”
